Plants and Animals

Searching for salamanders is not only fun, but also can help me detect changes happening in my community over time.

Because they breathe through their skin, salamanders must live in moist habitats and are sensitive to changes in their environment. A decline in the number of salamanders living in Keji could alert me to other changes happening in my community. Yellow spotted salamander

Counting salamanders can be difficult since they hide under rocks and logs during the day. Instead of disturbing their natural habitat, I have set up a series of boards on the forest floor to mimic these dark places where salamanders like to hide.

During your Keji visit, you will help me check under some of these boards to see what we can find.
